Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra: Everything Old is New Again Featuring Nelson Rangell
The Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra kicks off its second season with some big band funk or - as Delfayo Marsalis, brother of Wynton and Branford Marsalis, called it - “booty shakin’ music.” The band will trace the origins of this music, beginning with Duke Ellington’s “Rockin’ in Rhythm,” following it through the funky soulful sounds of the sixties and seventies, arriving in the present to feature pop and smooth jazz artist, Nelson Rangell.
Big bands began as dance orchestras, and the CJRO will get you up and moving to the groove. Smooth jazz has sometimes gotten a bad rap among jazz purists because it puts the rhythm and the groove first, but smooth jazz artist Nelson Rangell successfully combines both engaging grooves with amazing musicianship. Nelson will perform as part of the CJRO, and then be featured with his own Nelson Rangell Quartet in this special concert.
Audiences will hear Nelson play sax and flute, and maybe even whistle. Nelson attended the New England Conservatory as a flute major and is one of the finest jazz flutists in the world, with over 14 CD’s to his credit. Once again, the CJRO will feature the best musicians in the area movin’ and groovin’!
