University Mall Ebbs, Flows
TAMPA
(WUSF) -
University Mall's new owners unveiled plans for a $10 million renovation that will begin in April. It includes building new three-story atriums and signs along the Fowler Avenue side. And new plushy chairs and facilities will be built in the mall's central atrium and its common areas.
That doesn't hide the fact that mall isn't what it used to be. Stores with names such as Icing and Rush don't appeal to that upper demographic that the owners say they're aiming for. JCPenney has long departed for Pasco County. But mall managers say longtime anchors Dillards, Macy's and Sears aren't going anywhere, and they're getting ready to sign several "major" new tenants. © Copyright 2009, WUSF
