IHSA Releases Random Drug Test Results
(2009-02-16)
(wsiu) - The Illinois High School Association says none of the 264 student athletes it randomly tested for drugs last fall violated the group's policies.

The IHSA approved the random testing for performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids, in January 2008. The association only tests athletes involved in post-season play.

IHSA Assistant Executive Director Kurt Gibson says six students received medical waivers. He says they tested positive because of medicines they were taking for legitimate health conditions.

Gibson says random testing of athletes participating in post-season play for winter sports is now underway.

He says the IHSA hopes the testing program will deter students from taking performance-enhancing drugs.
