Former Professor to Run for U.S. Senate
(2009-10-26)
(wsiu) - Springfield Republican Kathleen Thomas is in the running for United States Senate.

The former Lincoln Land Community College professor had someone stay the night outside the State Board of Elections in Springfield to hold her place in line. She stepped in around 7 A-M to file her petitions in person. Thomas says she wants to bring something different to the beltway politics of Washington. "I feel that the politicians in Washington are going astray from the constitution, they're not listening to their constituents, they're not taking their constituents seriously, not all of them, but some of them, so I'm running to offer the voters something truly different in the state of Illinois."

Thomas is running for Barack Obama's old senate seat. The last Republican to fill the seat was Peter Fitzgerald.

Thomas says she believes she has a chance at winning ... even though polls heavily favor GOP Congressman Mark Kirk of Highland Park in the primary.

Other Republicans running for Senate include Andy Martin of Chicago, Don Lowry of Golconda and John Arrington of Harvey.

There is a crowded Democratic field as well.
